Zurich Malaysia breaks an “eggs-traordinary” record in conjunction with its annual community week

– Many hands make light work and if they happen to be school-going children, it is definitely a good reason to mark it in history. Thanks to the helping hands of 798 students of S.M.K. Putrajaya Precinct 11(2) and S.M.K. Agama Putrajaya, Zurich Malaysia managed to break a record set in The Malaysia Book of Records for the Most Number of Children Making Sandwiches in a Single Event.

Held in conjunction with the company’s annual Zurich Community Week (ZCW), the record-breaking event is in line with Zurich Malaysia’s long-term commitment to the well-being of children through initiatives that promote healthy eating habits as well as active lifestyles. ZCW serves as an avenue for its employees to contribute their time, resources and skills to make a positive difference to the communities in which they live and work.

It was indeed an “eggs-traordinary” co-curricular day for these students as they made their way down in their multi-coloured club uniforms, accompanied by 100 teachers to the school hall in attempt to break a national record. 47 mini “sandwich factory stations” were set up in the hall with 20 students assigned to each station. All geared up with aprons, facemasks, gloves as well as caps, the students were supervised by 150 Zurich Malaysia employees including local celebrity chef, Anis Nabilah, who made an appearance to share her culinary knowledge and provide nutritional advice to the children.

The ingredients of the egg omelette sandwiches included wholemeal bread, lettuce, tomato, cucumber as well as cheese; representing a balance diet that includes carbohydrates, protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. They were pre-prepared by Sodexo Malaysia Sdn. Bhd, a global food services and facilities management company, which is one the key partners alongside 100PLUS.

Cheering on the students today was Philip Smith, Chief Executive Officer of Zurich Life Insurance Malaysia Berhad who shared his sentiments on the rationale behind the record-breaking event, “ZCW is all about providing Zurich employees across the world with opportunities to make a difference and improve the lives of the local communities. For Zurich in Malaysia, we channel our community efforts to promote the well-being of children through initiatives and programmes that improve their knowledge on healthy eating habits. Today, we are delighted to partner one of our adopted schools under the Bank Negara Malaysia School Adoption Programme as we believe that it is equally important for children to learn how they can contribute to the society through meaningful actions. It is truly a privilege to see our employees, students and teachers motivated by a common purpose to do something good for the community.”

Within 45 minutes, 8726 egg omelette sandwiches were prepared and immediately packed to maintain its freshness. The sandwiches were then delivered in batches to 10 beneficiaries including shelter homes, orphanages, soup kitchens and underprivileged communities.

Beating the previous record of 503 children, the new Malaysia Book of Records certificate was presented by Gillian Ooi from the Malaysia Book of Records, who certified and witnessed the successful record breaking attempt. Also present to receive the certificate on behalf of the partnering schools were En. Hassim bin Markom, Principal of S.M.K. Putrajaya Precinct 11(2) as well as Puan Salmah Abdul Rani, Head of Student Affairs of S.M.K. Agama Putrajaya.
