Empowering Communities for a Climate-Resilient Tomorrow
About Urban Climate Resilience Program
The Urban Climate Resilience Program (UCRP) was initiated by the Z Zurich Foundation (the Foundation) in early 2023 to address urban climate challenges, ensuring cities can better withstand and recover from climate-related disasters. This program is a collaborative effort, bringing together the Foundation, several members of the Zurich Insurance Group, the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance, city networks and local governments to improve community resilience against climate changes.
In Malaysia, Zurich Malaysia took the lead by launching the UCRP in November 2023 in Melaka's Kampung Morten and Pantai Peringgit, in collaboration with local municipalities and network partners. By March 2024, the program expanded to Kuala Lumpur's People's Housing Project (PPR) Beringin and Kampung Pasir.
Why do we do this?
- The UCRP aims to help communities become strong and sustainable, capable of withstanding and recovering from climate disasters.
- It focuses on creating tailored resilience plans for each community based on thorough assessments of their specific needs, utilising innovative tools and community-led engagements.
- With the insights, we aim to scale the projects across other regions in Malaysia.
What is our approach?
- Innovative solutions – using the Climate Resilience Measurement for Communities (CRMC) approach that was developed by the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance to assess flood, heat, or wildfire resilience by evaluating human, social, physical, natural, and economic factors.
- Collaborative partnerships – working with network partners, local governments, and communities to understand climate challenges.
- Tailored solutions – analyzing insights to strategize, create, and implement customized resilience solutions.
