We define responsible investment is about managing our portfolio of over USD 200 billion in assets to create sustainable value or, in other words, to do well and to do good.
Doing ‘well' means generating superior risk-adjusted returns for the benefit of Zurich's policyholders and shareholders, and doing 'good' means benefiting society and the communities in which we live and work.
2018 sees a new phase of the Eat Right to Play Right programme being launched with new partnerships and initiatives, with the aim to elevate ERTPR further to benefit more children and their parents on proper nutrition.
Below is a list of activities and achievements under ERTPR in 2018:
- Launched the second phase of ERTPR to promote the wellbeing of children with the formation of strategic partnerships with sporting bodies Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), Malaysia Connecting Communities (MCC), and hypermarket chain MYDIN.
- Activated the inaugural Youth Cup tournament in five locations – Kedah, Malacca, Pahang, Sarawak, and the Klang Valley. Over 2,000 children reached between September and December. The winning teams from each location then competed in the Grand Finals on 8 December 2018. Click here for the list of winners from each tournament.
- Distributed ERTPR Nutritional Journal which sees around 300 young children recording their daily balanced diet for 21 days.
- 5 roadshows both in Peninsular and East Malaysia with 4 mini games to represent the 4 main food groups that is vital for children’s growth – Grains, Protein, Fruits & Vegetables, as well as Dairy.
- 7 carnivals titled Pesta Bola Sepak & Pemakanan Sihat (Football & Healthy Eating Carnival) were organised in various states around Malaysia throughout 2018.
- ERTPR has been awarded the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Dream Asia Awards 2018 in the Corporate Category.
- Lastly, Safee Sali who is Malaysia’s national footballer is now our ERTPR Ambassador!
Zurich employees come together during a selected week every year to contribute their time, skills, and resources to make a positive difference to the communities in which they live and work. This selected week is known as Zurich Community Week (ZCW).
This year, we decided to do things differently for ZCW! Hearing about the plight of Orang Asli communities around us, 70 volunteers travelled to Kampung Orang Asli Gurney in Batang Kali to build two homes for two deserving families. The build for both of the homes started on the early morning of 19th July 2019 and ended on the evening of 21st July 2019.
Each home features a foyer, a hall, three rooms, and a kitchen – providing ample space for the families especially the children when they are doing their homework.
The beneficiary of the first home is Suratman and his family. He and his wife, Rafeah, have been married for 20 years and have five children ages 8 to 17 years old. Suratman puts food on the table by selling forest product such as fruits and flowers, while his wife works as a housekeeping staff.
Zeek and Sari, together with their three children, are the beneficiary of the second home. Zeek earns a living by working as a factory worker and is the sole breadwinner for his family.
Both Suratman and Zeek hope that with their new and safer homes, they are able to provide a conducive environment for their children to be able to finish school and have opportunities for a better life.
Zurich Malaysia is committed to the financial literacy of young Malaysians. It is also our belief that it’s important to start them young. Every year, we channel our efforts to support the Bank Negara Malaysia Adopted School Programme, Celik Kewangan syllabus, “Tanggungjawab dan Membuat Keputusan Kewangan.”
In 2017, we increased our adopted schools from 3 to 5. These newly adopted schools are situated in the city of Putrajaya, which are SK Putrajaya Presint 11(2) and SMK Putrajaya Presint 11(2). We aim to continue to add 2 adopted schools to our financial programme by 2018.
With this programme, the students are given an opportunity to develop their entrepreneurship which are not taught by books.
